AO KHLONG SON
101 miles from Ocean MarinaAnchor anywhere in the bay in 4-5 metres on a sandy bottom. On the southern headland is the Aiyapura Resort and Spa.
This spot offers good all-round shelter for an overnight stop, although in very strong northeast winds it is better to favour the northern side of the bay. The main village on Koh Chang is approximately 4 kilometres from the ferry jetty at the mouth of the river in the bay.
There is a dredged channel to the river mouth where a marina is planned. It is proposed to have full facilities and serve the high-end property development Siam Royal View which is being built around this natural harbour.
WHITE SANDS BEACH
3 miles from Ao Khlong SonA sheltered anchorage in the northeast and tenable in the southwest seasons, anchor in 5-7 metres on sand. The northern end of the beach is an easier dinghy landing as the south end dries up to 100 metres at low tide. A popular anchorage is off the Fifteen Palms Resort, about half way along the beach. Look out for the palm trees in front of the resort.
This is the main tourist strip of Koh Chang with restaurants, resorts and bars lining the road running just behind the beach.
AO KHLONG PHRAO
5 miles from Ao Khlong SonThis makes a good haven in the northeast season. Anchor in the northern corner opposite the creek entrance in 5-7 metres. Explore the many resorts and facilities ashore, or mount a high-tide dinghy expedition along the river, which leads to a beautiful waterfall.
Just to the south is another bay Had Kae Bai where you can anchor in 5-6 metres. There are a few resorts ashore.
About a mile offshore there are numerous submerged rocks so keep a good lookout when travelling south.
LONELY BEACH (HAAD THANAM)
9 miles from Ao Khlong SonAnchor in 5-7 metres about 400 metres offshore opposite the Tree House. There are some rocks near the beach, so take care when taking the dinghy ashore. This bay has a few restaurants and resorts and is also on the main road.
AO BANG BAO
12 miles from Ao Khlong SonAnchor off the jetty in 3-5 metres on a muddy bottom near the light house. This spot is sheltered in both seasons and is an interesting mix of local fishing activity and tourism.
The one kilometre jetty is lined with an eclectic range of shops and restaurants on pilings which offer a complete range of fare. This is the main departure point for many tour boats, dive boats and ferries to the islands in the south and is a hive of activity.
This picturesque spot is not to be missed for a photo opportunity. To the east is Koh Chang Grand Lagoona Resort; an artificial channel leads to a lake where a large barge has been converted into a floating resort. At the head of the channel in the small marina are a few berths available for medium draft powerboats.
World War II wreckTo the east of Ao Salak Phet, off long beach, is the site of a naval battle between the French and Thai navies during the WWII. The Thai vessel still lies between two yellow buoys marking the location.
AO SALAK PHET
15 miles from Ao Khlong SonThis is a large natural bay in the south of the island divided by two smaller islands. It is generally shallow although anchorage is available in the west of the bay in 3-4 metres for good all-round protection.
On the west coast of the bay are two small marinas based on single jetties, one of which is named Koh Chang Marina and is home to the Sunsail fleet.
There are bungalows attached to this marina and if taking a berth, sailors are obliged to use them. Several restaurants are within 10 minutes by dinghy. The jetty further south is home to Gulf Charters, offering numerous interesting day trips to the outlying islands.
Access to both these jetties is via a shallow buoyed channel and should not be attempted at night.
Rocks in the waterBeware of the two submerged rocks to the southeast of the western point of Ao Salak Phet. Keep outside the 12 metre contour when navigating between Ao Bang Bao and Ao Salak Phet.
